Kerala witnessed one of the worst floods in the century. Hundreds lost their lives and thousands lost their houses in the floods during the ides of August. Many were forced to leave their houses and seek shelter.
From the day one itself I was in the thick of it. Its been a tough task, both mental and physical. We showed the world how strong we are. I personally visited relief camps, rang up companies seeking aid and provided aid to the needy.
During the flood days I spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone. We spoke close to 30 minutes and requested him to visit Kerala and make necessary arrangements for the relief works.
I have decided to spend Rs One Crore from the MP fund and donated my two month’s salary to Chief Ministers Disaster Relief Fund.
Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee will build 1000 houses for the victims of flood. To help the mission a cheque of Rs Five lakh was handed over to Congress President Sri Rahul Gandhi thus sponsoring one house.
Ernakulam District Congress Committee collected relief items and handed it over to various relief camps.
There were hate campaigns against Kerala though the help from across the globe was tremendous.
Businesses were hit, houses destroyed, several hundreds lost their belongings and Cochin International Airport was forced to shut down its operations.
After the floods all of the 20 elected MPs from Kerala along with senior congress leader A K Antony went to meet the Union Ministers including Rajnath Singh.
Also visited President Ram Nath Kovind and several others to appraise the situation.
The government should be conscious while dealing the relief fund and spend it wisely.
